AIFF Files - What they are and what they are for:
AIFF stands for Audio Interchange File Format and describes an audio file format by Apple. It uses the extension .aiff, .aif, or sometimes .aifc. The format was first seen in 1998 and is an extension of the older IFF audio format. AIFF has been very popular on Apple Macintosh computer systems and iPods, but nowadays the format got replaced by other formats like MP3.
Unlike MP3, AIFF is a lossless audio format using uncompressed pulse-code modulation (PCM) for storing audio streams. Therefore, it offers better sound quality than MP3 but on the other hand, needs more disk space. The default sample rate of AIFF is 44.1 kHz, and it comes with a bit depth of 16 bits. AIFF files can also store metadata information like name, author, annotations or comments, and copyright information.
The most popular applications for playing AIFF files are: The Microsoft Windows Media Player (on Windows), the Apple QuickTime Player (works with macOS or iOs) and the platform-independent VLC media player, which supports a wide range of audio formats.
