How does MIDI to MP3 conversion actually work?
A MIDI file is not audio — it is a set of instructions (which note, when, how loud, on which instrument). To make an MP3, those instructions first have to be turned into real sound. We do this with a software synthesizer and a SoundFont, a bank of recorded instrument samples that gives each note its actual tone. The synthesized sound is then encoded into MP3 at your chosen bitrate or quality. So conversion is really two concepts: synthesis (instructions → audio) and encoding (audio → compressed file). The instrument sounds you hear come from the SoundFont, not from the MIDI itself.
I’m in a hurry—what settings should I pick for a long track?
Use a standard kbps bitrate and sample rate instead of maxing everything out; that keeps the result smaller and avoids unnecessary re-encoding work. For speech, choose a lower bitrate; for music, choose a higher one.
