The EPS Format
SVG stands for a graphics file that is based on a vector graphics format created by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Technically all SVG images are encoded as XML files, providing the path information of all vector elements. The SVG format has become a standard format for displaying vector graphics on the web.
The SVG Format
The EPS format is another vector image format that is supported by various image editors like Adobe Illustrator or GIMP. The name stands for "Encapsulated PostScript" and was introduced by Adobe already in the 1980s. The format has become an industry standard for many printers and is still widely used. During the past years, the EPS format has been replaced by other file formats like the more modern PDF format. Nevertheless, there are still many EPS files in use and they can be easily converted to other vector file formats like SVG.
