It depends mostly on what you start with. Uncompressed WAV or AIFF and lossless FLAC/ALAC files are huge — a 3-minute song can be 30–50 MB — and turning them into MP3 typically cuts 80–90% off. An MP3 that was recorded at a very high bitrate can also shrink a lot; one that is already small won't shrink much further. Sound quality stays good because MP3 at 128 kbps is transparent for most listeners, and you can drop to 96 kbps for voice or step up to 192 kbps for music. You always see the estimated size and space saved before you commit.

Pick by what the audio is for. Smaller file (96 kbps) is ideal for spoken word — voice memos, podcasts, audiobooks — where tiny size matters most. Balanced (128 kbps) is the recommended all-rounder and sounds great for music and general use. Best quality (192 kbps) keeps the most detail for music you care about. If you need an exact size instead, use Target a size and the tool works out the bitrate for you.

Compression from a lossless source (WAV, FLAC) to MP3 is essentially transparent — the difference is hard to hear. Re-compressing a file that is already a low-bitrate MP3 is possible but has limits: you can make it smaller by lowering the bitrate, but you can't add back detail that was already discarded, so pick Balanced or Best quality if the original is modest. If you just need a set size, use Target a size and the tool finds the highest bitrate that fits. Everything runs in seconds, even for full albums or hour-long audiobooks.
